Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

FormDataTree

FormDataTree fills a gap between the FormData interface and PHP superglobal variables.

What problems does it solve?

To access user input data through a web form on client-side, you can use the FormData interface. A FormData object provides a set of key/value pairs representing form fields and their values, and the data model emulates the multipart/form-data encoding type.

Programming languages and libraries that can handle HTTP requests on server-side often provide their own methods to access user input data in the request. For instance, PHP provides "superglobal" variables like $_GET, $_POST, and $_FILES.

What is worth noting here is that the data structure representing the same user input can look different on client-side and on server-side. For example, when the user input data is like this:

country=China&country=India

A FormData object representing it will be in a structure like this:

{
  [
    [ "country", "China" ],
    [ "country", "India" ]
  ]
}

On the other hand, PHP constructs an associative array based on the user input data. The $_POST variable will be like this:

{
  "country": "India"
}

When square bracket notation ([]) is used, the difference becomes more noticeable. When the user input data is like this:

country[]=China&country[]=India

A FormData object treats the square brackets as a meaningless part of a field name, so it will be like this:

{
  [
    [ "country[]", "China" ],
    [ "country[]", "India" ]
  ]
}

PHP treats the square brackets as an array literal, so the $_POST variable will be like this:

{
  "country": [ "China", "India" ]
}

This gap becomes a problem when you need to process user input data in a consistent way on client-side and on server-side. FormDataTree has been created to resolve this problem. A FormDataTree object works as a wrapper of a FormData object, and has the ability to provide user input data in a structure equivalent to PHP's $_POST variable.

Installation

npm install @contactable/form-data-tree --save

Usage

import FormDataTree from '@contactable/form-data-tree';

// formData: FormData object
const formDataTree = new FormDataTree( formData );

// getAll() returns a single-layer array of field values.
// name: The field name
const values = formDataTree.getAll( name );

// get() returns a Map object representing the field branch.
// name: The field name
const map = formDataTree.get( name );
