Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Overview

Clerk is the easiest way to add authentication and user management to your Expo application. Add sign up, sign in, and profile management to your React Native application in minutes.

Getting Started

Prerequisites

  • React v18+
  • Node.js >=18.17.0 or later
  • react-native-inappbrowser-reborn

If an expo app already exists, you can skip this section and go straight to Installation. Otherwise, you can create a new Expo app by running:

npx create-expo-app my-app
cd my-app

Installation

Next, install the Clerk Expo SDK:

npm install react-native-inappbrowser-reborn
npx pod install
npm install @billyjacoby/clerk-react-native

Usage

Clerk requires your application to be wrapped in the <ClerkProvider/> context and passed your Publishable Key the publishableKey prop.

With Expo, the entry point is typically App.js:

import { StatusBar } from 'expo-status-bar';
import { StyleSheet, Text, View } from 'react-native';
import { ClerkProvider } from '@clerk/clerk-expo';

export default function App() {
  return (
    <ClerkProvider publishableKey={'your-publishable-key'}>
      <View style={styles.container}>
        <Text>Open up App.js to start working on your app!</Text>
        <StatusBar style='auto' />
      </View>
    </ClerkProvider>
  );
}

const styles = StyleSheet.create({
  container: {
    flex: 1,
    backgroundColor: '#fff',
    alignItems: 'center',
    justifyContent: 'center',
  },
});

A token cache is required to work with Clerk and Expo. This is entirely up to you how you handle the token cache - in this example we're going to use the expo-secure-store library. First, install it by running

npm i expo-secure-store

and then add the tokenCache to your entry file, as shown here:

import { StatusBar } from "expo-status-bar";
import { StyleSheet, Text, View } from "react-native";
import { ClerkProvider } from "@clerk/clerk-expo";
+ import * as SecureStore from "expo-secure-store";

+ const tokenCache = {
+  getToken(key) {
+    try {
+     return SecureStore.getItemAsync(key);
+    }
+    catch (err) {
+     return null;
+    }
+  },
+  saveToken(key, value) {
+    try {
+     return SecureStore.setItemAsync(key, value);
+    }
+    catch (err) {
+     return null;
+    }
+  },
+};

export default function App() {
  return (
    <ClerkProvider
      publishableKey={"your-publishable-key"}
+     tokenCache={tokenCache}
    >
      <View style={styles.container}>
        <Text>Open up App.js to start working on your app!</Text>
        <StatusBar style="auto" />
      </View>
    </ClerkProvider>
  );
}

const styles = StyleSheet.create({
  container: {
    flex: 1,
    backgroundColor: "#fff",
    alignItems: "center",
    justifyContent: "center",
  },
});

The section above covers the basic setup. For further details and examples, please refer to our Clerk Expo Documentation.
