Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

boba.js

Boba.js is animated background JavaScript module published to NPM.

Demo

Why

I created a background for my website but wanted to be able to make it re-usable. Creating the NPM module was an excuse to practice TypeScript and learn how to publish an NPM module.

How to Use

Using a CDN

In the body, import the script then call Boba.start() and pass in the configuration options.

<script src="https://unpkg.com/@benwiz/boba.js@latest/dist/bundle.js"></script>
<script>
  const options = Boba.getDefaultOptions();

  var color1 = { r: 255, g: 0, b: 0, a: 0.1 };
  options.vertexColors = [color1];
  options.edgeColors = [color1];

  var color2 = { r: 255, g: 0, b: 0, a: 0.05 };
  options.shapeColors = [color2];

  Boba.start(options);
</script>

Using ES6 modules

Install the package

npm install @benwiz/boba.js

Import the package, override any options, then call the Boba.start() function.

import * as Boba from '@benwiz/boba.js';

// Initialize boba.js options by grabbing the defaults
const bobaOptions = Boba.getDefaultOptions();

// Canvas configs
bobaOptions.x = 0;
bobaOptions.y = 0;
bobaOptions.width = document.documentElement.scrollWidth;
bobaOptions.height = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;

// Vertex configs
bobaOptions.numVertices = 40;
bobaOptions.drawVertices = true;
bobaOptions.vertexMinSize = 8;
bobaOptions.vertexMaxSize = 16;
bobaOptions.vertexMinSpeed = 0.5;
bobaOptions.vertexMaxSpeed = 2;
bobaOptions.vertexColors = [
  {
    r: 0,
    g: 255,
    b: 0,
    a: 0.1,
  },
];

// Edge configs
bobaOptions.numNeighbors = 2;
bobaOptions.drawEdges = true;
bobaOptions.edgeColors = [
  {
    r: 0,
    g: 255,
    b: 0,
    a: 0.1,
  },
];

// Shape configs
bobaOptions.drawShapes = true;
bobaOptions.shapeColors = [
  {
    r: 0,
    g: 255,
    b: 0,
    a: 0.05,
  },
];

// Start the animation
Boba.start(bobaOptions);

Mobile considerations

If using the default canvas height document.documentElement.scrollHeight, ensure the following CSS is used to ensure the HTML document is the full height of the mobile browser.

html {
  height: 100%;
}

stop function

Call Boba.stop() to stop the animation and remove the canvas. Right now, call stop then start if options are changed. In the future, I'd like to handle changing options more elegantly.
