Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Typed Events

A zero Dependency drop-in replacement for NodeJS EventEmitter to support strictly typed events without modifying the EventEmitter namespace.

Why?

When using NodeJS's EventEmitter, typings are not enforced. This means that you can listen to events that don't exist and might encounter unexpected event arguments that lead to unintended behavior.

After searching for a while I couldn't find an open source library that helps with this, so I decided to create one myself.

When to use it

If you are working with typescript and know exactly what events will be emitted and what data they will pass along: This library is exactly for you!

Not only does it enable valuable intellisense during development, it also ensures your events are type safe and easy to use for people who use your project.

Installation

Using npm:

$ npm i -g npm
$ npm i @astrogd/typed-events

Usage

Import the package

import { TypedEventEmitter, CustomEvents } from '@astrogd/typed-events';

Declare your events

interface MyEvents extends CustomEvents {
  'my-event': (myArg: string) => void;
  'my-other-event': (myArg: boolean, mySecondArg?: number) => void;
}

Create a new instance of the TypedEventEmitter and start using it like the NodeJS EventEmitter

const events = new TypedEventEmitter<MyEvents>();

Example

import { TypedEventEmitter, CustomEvents } from '@astrogd/typed-events';

// You can define your events as an interface...
interface MyEvents extends CustomEvents {
    'my-event': (someArgument: boolean) => void;
    'removeListener': (customArgument: boolean) => void;
}

// ...or as a custom type
type MyEventsType = {
    'my-event': (someArgument: boolean) => void;
    'removeListener': (customArgument: boolean) => void;
}

const events = new TypedEventEmitter<MyEvents>();
events.emit("my-event", true); // Our own events work
events.emit("newListener", "my-event", () => {}); // Default events from NodeJS's EventEmitter are supported too!

// You can also merge a custom implementation of a default event and types will be supported
events.emit("removeListener", "my-event", () => {});
events.emit("removeListener", true);

// Types for the listener function are inferred and ready to use!
events.on("my-event", (customArgument) => {
    console.log(customArgument);
})

events.on("removeListener", (firstArg: boolean | string | symbol, secondArg?: Function) => {
    // Yay we merged the default listener types with the custom implementation!
});

// You can also attach the typed event emitter to your custom class:
class MyCoolClass extends TypedEventEmitter<MyEventsType> {
    constructor() {
        super();

        this.emit("my-event", true); // Works out of the box
    }
}
