Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Live HTML

A simple lightweight CLI tool built as a Node JS package to be a direct substitute to the Live Server extension available in VS code.

Serve your HTML locally and with hot reload to increase your productivity by using Live HTML.

Quickstart

1. Install the package.

Make sure to install the package globally so that you can use it whenever you want, wherever you want without downloading it again and again.

npm i -g @abenezer-daniel/live-html

2. Move to your project folder.

Open a terminal window where your current working directory is located.

cd path/to/your/project

3. Launch the server 🚀

Just run the below commadn in your project directory to start the server.

live-html

You also have an option to input a specific port as shown below.

Launch the server on a free port. Good options would be ports starting from 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000.

Please make sure to follow the format below.

live-html port-number

Example

live-html 5500

4. Open the port in a browser and go to the path of your HTML file.

The path of the server will be shown to you once you start the above command, you can either Ctrl + click the link or just enter it manually in user browser as shown below.

http://localhost:5500/path/to/your/file

Example

If your HTML file is located in a path similar to this: pages/about.html. Then you would open the below URL in your browser.

http://localhost:5500/pages/about.html

[!IMPORTANT] For the live reload to work you need to provide a valid HTML skeleton including a body tag.

[!NOTE] If your HTML file is called index.html, then you don't need to enter index.html, just a "/" would be enough.

Now when you make changes to your HTML file, it should reflect in the browser without the need for refresh.
